Abby + Leigh | Pregnancy Announcement

When I first met Abby, Milla was running around at her feet and Arlo was growing nicely in her belly.  Abby of course was absolutely glowing!  Wow if anyone can make pregnancy look amazing it is Abby!  It was the perfect day for a maternity photoshoot by the water in Williamstown.

Since that day, way back in 2016, I have had the absolute pleasure of being a part of so many wonderful moments shared between Abby and her beautiful girls Milla and Arlo, photographing the girls as they grow, sharing in their love and laughter, freezing their moments in time to remember always.  From maternity and newborn, Arlo’s sitter session, a hilarious cake smash session, to Mummy and Me minis in the park.  We have shared it all!

In photography, you do get to meet new people all the time and share a special relationship with them.  Being in front of the camera can be some what daunting for most, not many enjoy it, but all know how important it is to be present in the photos for future generations.  But the anxiety that comes with being in front of the camera means you have to let your guard down, put so much trust in your photographer, know that they have your back and will help you to feel at ease, relaxed and simply enjoy the experience.  So because of this, I have formed some truly beautiful connections with the families I have photographed and am so lucky to be able to call a lot of them friends now.

Abby and I have been connected through photography for almost 3 years and I am so lucky to consider her a beautiful friend.  So it is no secret that I completely adore them all and want nothing more than to see them in a happy life, filled with love.

This is where Leigh comes in!  If you follow Abby you will have seen as I have, the happiness surrounding this family since he arrived on the scene.  How incredibly awesome is he and how lucky for them to have all found each other!

In December 2018 Abby sent me a message to ask if I was keen to do something fun with them.  My answer is always yes of course, who wouldn’t want fun in their day job right?!  When she told me the top secret exciting news I was over the moon for them! I got goosebumps of happiness, and actually right now typing this I have them again!  Abby is the most incredible Mum to Milla and Arlo, a role she was absolutely born to play and now number 3 was on the way!

So, we set the plans in motion for their pregnancy announcement shoot.  A session I was to keep absolutely top secret, but one I was super excited about!  In December my diary is chockers many months ahead so we had one date to work with, my kids had to tag along, and it just so happened to be one of the worst days weather wise of the year!  We headed down to Williamstown and drove through flood waters to get there!  Milla and Arlo wore gumboots and we were sure we were going to get rained out.

But the weather gods played our game!  The clouds were in all the right places, the sky was dry, Milla was the happiest I have ever ever seen her and Arlo had all the right moves for her future on Australia’s Top Model!  We ran around and played silly games, Milla smothered Abby in endless squishy face kisses, Arlo took about 3000 photos on my camera, Abby and Leigh laughed together at all their craziness and my kids hid under umbrellas watching a movie.  Oh to be watching us from a distance that day would have been quite a site!

But like every photoshoot with Abby and the girls, the magic was there, everything aligned as it should and we found joy in the silly.

The initial idea for the photos was to simply find a cool way to help Abby and Leigh tell the world about their exciting news, but it turned out to be so much more.  Leigh hadn’t joined us for a shoot before, so while he of course has been in their world for a long time now, these photos show them as a gorgeous family of 4, soon to be 5.

Abby and Leigh, I am so so happy for you both and am very excited for the next step in your story.  Bring on April when we capture that gorgeous growing belly!! ❤

Melbourne Newborn Photographer | Baby Harvey

Meet grumpy, frowny little Man Harvey and his adorable big Brother Charlie.  These two little men had my heart from the minute they walked in the door, Charlie wasn’t a huge fan of being in front of the camera, but we tickled some smiles out of him and the constant promise of sultanas got us through.

Harvey and those eyebrows…he gave me the BEST facial expressions all the way through his session, he has such a little old man face, such delicious pouty lips and that hair! ❤

A Newborn Photography session in my Montmorency Studio is always a calm one, quiet, peaceful, a day off for you while I play with your children.  This day with Harvey and Charlie was not unlike every other session.  If you bring your older children in to play along, there are toys hidden away that I only ever bring out once I am ready for their attention not to be on me and their brand new baby.  A little table and chairs set aside for all the very best artists to do their drawing.  A ridiculously comfy reclining glider chair which has been slept in countless times by both exhausted up all night feeding Mums and Dads.

Newborn nappies and wipes are well stocked on the change table in the corner and, as this is your day off from all the hard stuff, I do all the heavy lifting for you.  Simply hand me your baby, let me cuddle them endlessly while I create some precious memories for you and your family to look back on forever as your little people grow.

Tara, Jason, Charlie and Harvey, thank you for your day in the studio.  Thank you for choosing me as your Newborn Photographer and allowing me the pleasure of your company.  I hope your day off was a relaxing one and I hope the sultanas were as delicious as they looked Charlie 😉

Lauren + Lara | Mummy and Me | Melbourne Family Photographer

Anyone who has a conversation with me will know I always strongly encourage the whole family to get in front of the camera.  Just once.  Even if you never look at the photo, or perhaps you do, but ten years down the track, just be in the shot.  Not for you, but for your children, for your family, for those who want to remember you when in the very distant future, you are not there anymore.  For your children who won’t necessarily remember today as clearly as you do.  For your children who may one day have questions and are visual beings who like to look at the pretty pictures.

I have these god awful photos my Husband took of me when I was heavily pregnant with my now 11 year old Hayden.  It took me 10 whole years to appreciate those photos.  They are not professional shots, they are dark and grainy and somewhat blurry, I am pastey white with stretch marks all over the place, because I was pregnant with Hayden in my ankles and arms and chins and boobs…he was EVERYWHERE and I look just bloody awful!

But last year, as I came to terms with the fact that he was turning 10, I sat down and looked back through photos, I made a slideshow of images of him growing up and you know what, I included those hideous photos of me and my belly.  Because they are all I have, and they are me, becoming a Mum.  Now because I still have them and didn’t hit delete the minute I saw them, he has them too.  And when Lily sits me down and asks me all about having a baby as she does far too often, I not only have the beautiful shots I had taken of her growing belly, but I have the hideous ones of the boys bellies too, and we share a moment of reflection and she looks at me in wonder probably thinking how ginormous Mum once was.  She asks me questions and I tell her stories all about those days.

Photos tell us our history, they share with others who we are and what we are.  They open up a world of your past and they are those moments, frozen in time for ever.  So, as I was saying, I strongly encourage everyone to be in the photo at least once.

Here we have Lauren and her beautiful cheeky little Miss Lara.  A Mini Session that was intended originally to be the whole family, but Dad had to stay home sick so it was just the girls.  Disappointing that he couldn’t be there on the day, but the silver lining is, we got to create some precious Mummy and Me moments.  Just the girls hanging out, Lara telling us how she planned on spending the day, climbing fallen trees and running around in the space that was wide open just for her.

Those adorable cheeks and that sweet smile, this session is everything I look for in an afternoon amongst the trees and I laughed and went home with a sore jaw from smiling right along with them.

Lauren, thank you for choosing me as your family photographer and for getting in front of the camera.  Thank you for introducing me to your beautiful little Lara!  I had the very best time with you both on this almost wet afternoon and so glad we got all of our fun done and dusted before the rain really set in!

Melbourne Family Photographer | The Menzies Family

One of my favourite things to do is to work with people who are not a big fan of being in front of the camera, it will often be a a child, mainly boys, or the Dad…I know it sounds ridiculous, but in all honesty, the more you hate being there, the more fun I will have with you.

There’s great joy in a challenge for me so the minute I discover that this session is the last thing you wanted to do today, I start planning in my head all the different ways I can make this fun for you!

When I met the Menzie’s family in Eltham, I had spoken to Mum Taryn on the phone a couple of times and we had emailed back and forth a bit in preparation, but we hadn’t really talked about who in the family wasn’t super keen.  This is completely normal, I actually like it to be a surprise sometimes.

So session day comes around, and I meet Balin.  A cheeky, uninterested 10 year old who pretty much said no to me from the very first second.  I knew from the look on his face that he didn’t want to be there, but he had just enough spunk to not be afraid of putting his foot down and saying no…so yep, you guessed it, he was my target and lucky Balin was going to be in so many more photos that everyone else 😉 It was my mission to get a laugh out of him, to get him to relax and of course, to get him to have fun!

Families like the Menzies bring out my very best Dad jokes and I love to get a laugh out of them, and it wasn’t difficult at all.  The first shot in camera was of them all laughing together and the scene was set for the afternoon.

There were cuddles, there was endless laughter, there was awkward teenagers and unimpressed boys, then there was little Miss Cadence who was all over this photo thing.  She smiled and giggles, she cuddles and was full of energy.  This was her time to shine, and shine she did!

We had muscle competitions and silly jokes, and then there was visiting photobombing dogs who brought on the biggest laughs I’d seen yet.  This session was so much fun, the sun was shining, the love was all over these 5 and I could not wait to get home and sort through the magic that happened!  AND Balin had fun!  Mission complete!

Menzies family, you guys are awesome!  Thank you so much for sharing your afternoon with me and for choosing me as your family photographer. I hope we get to do it again one day!

Melbourne Family Photographer | Mummy and Me | Michelle + Hayley

As a photographer, I along with all of my photographer peers, never stop talking about the importance of stepping out from behind the iPhone cameras and being IN the photos with your kids.  It’s incredibly important to show your kids just how important a photo can be, but sadly most of us let our own self doubt and insecurities get in the way and the opportunities are often missed.  Have you ever sat back and thought, if you weren’t here, would your kids remember what you look like?

I had that disturbing thought a couple of years ago when having this very conversation with another photographer.  At the time I had a small, scarily small handful of selfies on my phone with my kids, but I had not done a single thing with the photos, they were forever left on the phone and then a new phone would come along and those photos would be forgotten.  So really, if the worst were to happen and I was no longer here with my family, how on earth would they ever remember what I even looked like as the years passed without me.

So this thought sticks with me during every session I photograph.  These photos that I take are not just for your social media, they are not just to give as a gift to the grandparents or to be displayed and loved up on your walls, they are a memory.  They are for future generations, they are for you to tell your grandchildren your story, they are for your children to tell their children about who they are and where they have come from.  they are for them to remember you and for you to remember them.  They are a memory.

I received an email from Michelle a couple of months ago looking for a photographer for herself and her daughter Hayley.  It’s just the two of them, so even if she wanted to, there is not often someone else around to take a photo of them together.  Michelle understood the importance of being in the photo with Hayley and she simply wanted something relaxed and casual, a simple style of photo, just the two of them living the moment.

She found me and knew my work was exactly what she was looking for.  I knew she was exactly what I was looking for too, a Mum and her baby, cuddles and laughter, tickles and silliness.  Perfect.

So we met, Hayley the cheeky little thing had her own plans, but little did she know, they fit right within my plans for the session and the joy I captured for these two was just beautiful.  The weather played my game and stayed nice, the sun came out to give me beautiful rays and Hayley finished us off with the perfect giggles and smiles.  Michelle and Hayley’s Mummy and Me Photoshoot was everything it should be and more.

Thank you Michelle for finding me, for choosing me as your family photographer and for sharing your gorgeous Hayley with me.  I cannot wait until next time when I get to meet your crazy furbabies!

Melbourne Maternity Photographer | On This Day | Rick Family

On This Day in 2015.  When ever I head back to the Adelaide Hills to photograph families who miss me, I try to make as much time as I can to catch up with as many beautiful friends as I can.  It’s always a huge bonus when catching up turns into a maternity photoshoot on the top of a mountain as the sun goes down!

Mel and Lily first joined Baby Club when Lily was just a teeny tiny month or two old, I remember the day they walked in the studio, my own little Lily was still also very tiny, they were just a month apart and I had taken a short break from shooting to feed her between little people.  Mel sat down and we all just sat around chatting, an instant Mother’s Group in the studio.

As they continued to visit each and every month for Baby Club over the years, our friendship grew into something I truly value to this day.  This gorgeous family is one I always make time for on my visits back to Adelaide.

Mel is one incredible beautiful pregnant woman, she grows the most adorable babies and it was an honour to be able to capture her third pregnancy.  It was a little chilly on the top of the mountain, but the most incredible light and stunning view!  Lily picked flowers and danced around, William, the sweet little man had the cutest cheekiest smile and it still amazes me just how much the two children look alike.

The family cuddles are what I live for and I will never grow tired of photographing these guys.  Sadly I couldn’t make it back to town to photograph sweet little Natalia when she arrived, but one day, maybe soon, it should be just about time to update these photos to make it a family of five ❤

Mel and Liam, from Baby Club to your wedding, to all the maternity photos and cake smash sessions, each and every time you have been in front of my camera has been an absolute joy for me and I cannot thank you enough for your support of me behind the camera and for your friendship.  It has meant the world to me.

Melbourne Product Photographer | The Baby Bathroom Co

In February I was sitting at the airport waiting to board a plane to LA, heading over to America for the Social Media Marketing World Conference in San Diego.  While sitting, waiting patiently, sipping on a chai latte, I got an email from Hayley.  She was all set to launch her brand new business that she had been working on for the past 4 years and was in need of something beautiful to show her new product off to the world.

The Baby Bathroom Co began in 2014 when Hayley’s first son was born.  He loved the bath and shower, however, they were extremely nervous when they realised just how slippery his skin became when wet. The Infant Bathing Glove has been designed to help you shower or bathe your newborn with total confidence.

While Hayley could see from the work on my website that I really only photograph families and babies, she was hoping that perhaps I offer product photography too.  Of course the answer was a big yes!

We put the conversation on hold until I got back from my trip and when we got together on the phone, we immediately click.  The vision I had developed for Hayley’s brand on my travels was exactly the vision she had herself, I understood her needs and how best to help her launch.  Talking with Hayley felt like talking with a long lost friend, I felt I had known her for a lifetime already and I couldn’t wait to meet her in person.  The discovery that our houses were just a few short hundred metres from each other was a bonus, so we agreed that finding a local cafe in Montmorency to get together and nut out the finer details was a must!

Over another delicious hot chai latte the plans took place, colour schemes, models, locations and all were discussed and we were both as excited as each other I think!

The day spent behind the camera with three gorgeous little people modelling for us was so much fun.  I thoroughly enjoyed every minute working with Hayley, seeing the look come to life and seeing the excitement in her face when I would show her little glimpses of the back of my camera.  This was her baby and I could tell she truly believed it was all coming together, this was going to work!

Product Photography is something I have been working on a lot behind the scenes over the years, but not something I overly advertise.  The product and personal branding work that does come my way, finds me organically, through networking and casual conversations with people I meet.

When I am working with a client to discover their brand, to put a face to their products, I take it on with all of me.  The product photos on your website will influence a new customer’s first impression of your product. Online shopping removes the ability to get up close and turn the product around in their hands. Having professional photos of your products will allow your customers to get a clear idea of what the product is that they are purchasing and give them an excellent online shopping experience with you.

Excellent photography is one of the easiest ways to set the tone for your online store, and tell your customer that you are committed to quality. I truly believe in the value of high quality images and understand the importance of showing your customers a true image of the products you offer.  A true vision of who you are.

Hayley, you should be so proud of your business and the hard work you have put in over the past 4 years, all while raising two gorgeous little boys.  Thank you so much for including my in the journey and for trusting in me to take it on board and create something unique to you and your beautiful products.  I cannot wait to see where this ride takes you!
