COVID-19 related Frequently Asked Questions for Newborn Photography

Well, what a year 2020 has been so far hey!  Hands up who’s had enough already?!

So, like many businesses, I have experienced some changes and am navigating through as best I can.  Today marks almost 9 weeks since I last picked up my camera and visited my beautiful new studio that Nic had been working so hard on to complete for me.  Not to mention the 8 weeks in lockdown round 1.  I am so incredibly grateful that we were able to get back there even if for just a small amount of time throughout May-June.

As you can imagine, it’s been pretty tough not being able to photograph all of the amazing families who have so lovingly picked me as the perfect photographer for them.  But the most important thing I keep reminding myself, is that this is only temporary.  It won’t last forever and there is certainly worse situations out there than a very impatient creative soul like me itching to pick up her camera again.

I’ve been getting quite a lot of emails recently from expecting parents asking if I am still working during the Stage 4 restrictions, and basically the very short answer is no.  Newborn Photography sessions are very hands on, I adore a sweet new baby cuddles and the wrapping and posing process realistically means that I cannot conduct a session while observing the social distancing rules that are currently in place.

Not only that, right now, things are at a level that we have never experienced before, so while I would do anything right now to be in the studio with all the babies who have been entering the world over the past couple of weeks, the risk to them is just not worth it, especially when I know that waiting just a couple of extra weeks will not make too much difference the the beautiful lasting memories I can help families create.

But I thought, as I do keep getting a lot of the same questions, that perhaps it might be handy if I put a few of those concerns to rest with my very own COVID-19 Photography related FAQs.  So, here we go…

Are you photographing babies right now?
No.  Due to the current stage 4 restriction laws, photographers are unable to work with families right now.  things are changing daily and we are waiting for an update on these rules, which I am hoping are released at the end of the month when we move from stage 4 to step 2 of stage 3.   But for right now, I have hung up my camera and am waiting oh so impatiently to pick it up again as soon as possible.

I have a Newborn Session booked with Tiny and Brave, will I still be able to have my baby photographed?
Yes!  Of course you will!  I am aiming to ensure every single family wanting photos, will eventually have them.  So I am not cancelling anything, simply putting things on pause for a little while.  Once your baby has arrived, we will chat about what we are able to do at that time.  If we are still experiencing Stage 3 or 4 restrictions, your baby may have to wait a little longer than others depending on their arrival dates, but I assure you, everyone will receive a beautiful gallery of images to remember this time.

Are you taking on new Newborn Session bookings during stage 4 restrictions?
Yes and no.  I am not photographing any families during the restrictions, however I am booking in sessions to be held once restrictions ease.  Anyone wishing to have their baby photographed by me will not be turned away.  However, it is vital that you are aware of the rules in place for us before we go ahead with finalising your booking.  Your baby may be due to arrive before restrictions ease so it is important for you to know that you may be waiting a little while longer than our ideal 7-14 days.  If you are happy to join me in the game of patience, then I will absolutely love to pencil your baby’s due date in and wait the exciting news with you!

My baby has already arrived, can I still book a newborn session with you?
Yes please! Just like families still waiting the arrival of their little person, we’re playing the waiting game.  So, if you are looking to book a session with me, I will put your baby’s birthdate in my diary and once things settle and I get the go ahead, I’ll be in touch to set a date.  Simple, easy, no one misses out!

When will you begin photographing babies again?
Business Victoria has classified all genres of professional Photography under the ‘Office and Professional Services’ category for the industry restriction levels.  Below I have provided the relevant reopening road map in Metro Melbourne in regards to professional photography.  Stage 4 is due to end on September 28th and with the information we have received so far, it looks like things are start to ease just a little by the end of October, all going well with the numbers.  October 26th 2020 to be exact.  This is my goal for now.  I am hoping that we will see restrictions easing just enough on this date that we will be able to get back into the studio that week.  However, we are seeing daily changes and I am keeping an eye on things to ensure that the minute I am allowed, I will have the key in the studio door and have you booked in as close to your baby’s arrival date as possible.

What measures do you have in place to ensure it is safe for us to visit your studio?
The health and safety of my clients and their children is always my top priority, due to the measures I take each and everyday prior to, during and after sessions, not too much will need to be changed going forward.  However things have certainly been stepped up a notch with the current pandemic.
My studio has a high standard of cleanliness at all times.  All blankets and props used during a session are always and will continue to be washed thoroughly after each newborn session.
All surfaces are cleaned between sessions.  No more than one newborn session is ever held on any given day and this will remain the case moving forward to ensure ample cleaning time is given between each family visiting the studio.
I will ask that anyone entering the studio wash their hands thoroughly before touching any surfaces and hand sanitiser will be made available for anyone present to use throughout the session.  As I will be very hands on with your baby, I will be using it thoroughly throughout the entire session.
Face masks will be required, obviously having your photo taken with a mask on isn’t ideal, so we are still waiting to be told how things will work when we do reopen in regards to this.  Either way, I will be wearing one while photographing you and your baby.
I have not left my house for the past 6 weeks and once restrictions do begin to ease, I will be continuing to limit my travel to only leave my home to photograph families.  Whether it be at an outdoor location while social distancing or in the studio for newborn sessions.  Everywhere else is off limits for me to ensure the risk of contracting the virus and passing it onto any of the families I am lucky enough to photograph is kept to the bare minimum.

Your website says it is best to photograph my baby in the first 7-14 days of age, how will COVID-19 affect this?
Yep you’re right, this is the ideal timeframe as we work to achieve those delicious squishy teeny tiny sleepy newborn poses.  However over the past 10 years of photographing babies, I have worked with all ages.  Quite often Mums are in hospital a little longer than planned, babies arrive too early and have lengthy stays in hospitals, families simply are unable to come and see me right away.  Circumstances differ for each family so quite often I find myself photographing babies anywhere from 7 days right up to 3 months.

How will you work with an older baby?
In short, I wouldn’t expect to change much of the session at all, but I am very much guided by your little person and what they are able to do on the day.
My style is quite relaxed and natural, which allows me to adapt to your baby’s age at the time of the session rather than only working within the set timeframe.  I simply work to photograph your little one’s personality and features that make them unique on the day I meet you.
Older babies are much more alert than they were in their first couple of weeks, they have had more time to discover how interesting their new world is and they want to be a part of it.  You will notice this change at home as they start to move from super sleepy to a little bit more reactive to your voice and touch.
So we tend to achieve a lot more awake shots, capturing gorgeous eye contact and as they grow and change their little personalities really start to shine through and we get some images that really make us giggle.
This is a beautiful opportunity for us to make a shift as I truly believe every Mum and Dad should have at least one photo of their little baby looking at the camera.  I have definitely been known to wake up a tiny 7 day old to get this very shot, so like I said above, really nothing will change too much.
As always, some babies are a little more flexible than others, for this reason I don’t have exact poses I work to achieve, again as I mentioned earlier, I am guided by your baby.  The poses you see on my website are all slightly different as your baby guides me in what their version of these poses will be.  This is very much the case for an older baby too.  I always ensure they are comfortable and relaxed at all times during the session and will only work with poses that your baby is able to do with just a little guidance from me, always ensuring their safety is my number on priority.

Do you have examples of older newborn photos I can see?
Yep!  Below are some absolutely adorable little people and their families, all photographed after the 7-14 day age bracket.

I have a question that you haven’t covered here, what should I do?
Well that’s easy fixed!  Get in touch with me and let’s have a chat.  My days are currently filled with remote learning and baking, so please get in touch!  I am sure I can drag myself away from that riveting Groundhog Day experience to talk all things newborn photography…please, get in touch! 😉 You can do this easily via the Contact Page.

At the end of the day, we hear it often, it’s loud and clear.  We are all in this together, so I am here to help you, to guide you through this process and ensure one day, hopefully sooner rather than later, you will be taking home beautiful photos of your new baby.  I can’t wait for that day!

Baby Josh | Melbourne Newborn Photographer

Sometimes when I meet a tiny human in my studio, I fall in love instantly.  I mean, of course I completely adore every brand new baby I meet, who wouldn’t?!  They are tiny and squishy and sleepy and cuddly and precious.  Their tiny toes and fingers and eyelashes and dimples are completely delicious and you just can’t stop staring!!

But, there are times, where I just get a connection with a baby, it’s not a physical connection, more an emotional one…or maybe it’s not even emotional.  It’s not spoken, I just know it’s there when I look at their little face.  I find myself staring at them between photos, getting lost in a moment, quietly taking in all of their little details, the softness of their skin, the flakey bits of new skin their bodies no longer need, the almost invisible stands of hair on the edges of their ears.

As I write this, I grow more curious as to where this silent invisible connection may come from, and looking at little Josh here, I think, perhaps it’s that they remind me of my little ones, or other little ones in my family.  And then, you think that this little guy in front of you, is someone’s brand new.  Someone’s Son, Grandson, Nephew.  Perhaps he is the first, perhaps he is the first boy, perhaps he has many cousins eager to smother him with love.   I completely adore family, and the differences between every single one of us, every family is different and has something that makes them tick, and every one always has a funny family member that just makes us all laugh, roll our eyes, shake our heads in wonder…and perhaps, this little guy will blow the minds of his entire family as he grows and shares life with them.

I love that simply looking through these photos from little Josh’s newborn photoshoot with me, you can put your imagination to good use and plan his life, pretend you’re looking at the very next astronaut to land on the moon, a bright young man who will discover the cure for cancer, a writer of beautiful children’s stories, a football star, a doctor, a teacher, a dentist, anything.  Josh could grow up to be anything he likes and I know his family will surround him with endless, unconditional love no matter the path he choose.

Looking at the concentration in those little eyebrows frowning back at me I have a feeling he’ll be a little serious man for a while, or perhaps bury his head in books!

And that’s my ramblings for this Monday morning…probably got off track a little…but hey, it’s my blog so what are you going to do about it?!

Before I sign off, I’d like to introduce you to the adorable Josh Thomas Campbell, his big furbrother Franklin and his awesome parents Brooke and Simon.  You guys are legends, thank you SO much for sharing your family with me and allowing me to be your newborn photographer.

Melbourne Newborn Photographer | On This Day | Baby Indi

Today brings memories from another gorgeous baby girl who I was lucky to have met back in 2016.  Sweet brand new baby Indi Charlotte was born on Friday June 10th 2016 at 4.15pm.  She was a teeny tiny 2.9kgs when she arrived in Mum Rachael’s arms and became a brand new baby sister for her brand new big brother Quinn.

I was lucky enough to meet this beautiful family in my newborn studio on June 28th when Indi was just 18 days new and oh my goodness was she adorable!

She had the most incredible eyebrows I had ever seen, the hairiest of shoulders, a beautiful little button nose, eyelashes to die for and when she opened those big brown eyes, her face just lit up.  Quinn was a very adoring big brother, super helpful feeding her with the bottle, the most precious cuddles and sweet baby kisses.  I always love to photograph new siblings together and this day in the studio was very special.  The love I got to witness was so sweet.

I loved this session so much that if you visit the studio in Montmorency, you will see quite a few of the images displayed in my beautiful bamboo frames.  I simply fell in love with little Indi and completely over photographed her!

Rachael and Tyronne, thank you so much for introducing me to Quinn and Indi, for spending the morning with me in the studio and for choosing me as your newborn photographer.  It was an absolute privilege to photograph you and your family together, to help you to remember just how tiny Indi was as she grows.  I hope to one day be lucky enough to do it all again.

Melbourne Newborn Photographer | Baby Lola

Oh this family…what can I say, I fell in love with them when we met down at Griffith Park in Eltham for their Maternity photos. I remember laughing and smiling, the cheeky smiles, the game of ring-a-ring-a-rosie, wrestling with Dad, how amazing Ash looked while growing their precious little girl…I could’ve stayed in the park all night long photographing those 4 gorgeous humans…I left thinking to myself, oh my goodness I cannot wait to get home and share what I just photographed.

And then, I thought how exciting, I get to do it all again in a few short weeks when they come into the studio for the newborn photos…and that session, it seriously did not disappoint.

Little Lola, what a sweet sweet little Miss. An absolute delight to photograph, as are her incredible adorable Big Brothers. The cuddles, the love, the super cool outfits. Photographers dream of families like this to photograph and to get to spend such quality time with them all twice is a true blessing.

I could rave on and on about these 5 all day, but I won’t, scroll down and see for yourself, Miss Lola, a gorgeous newborn baby girl and her loving family in my natural light studio in Montmorency. Ash and Brad, thank you for choosing me to photograph your gorgeous family…and please have baby number 4 just so we can do this all again 😉

Baby Quinn | Montmorency Newborn Photographer

Baby Quinn. Erin had told me countless times that she wanted another baby, four, she wanted four. When she told me she was FINALLY expecting that fourth little person, I was completely over the moon for her and John. They already had beautiful Ebony, already an amazing big sister. Little Aston, cheeky and sweet, a little man who reminds me SO much of my Rory. And last but not least, tiny little Harry. Adorable, just as sweet and cheeky as Aston and set to be an absolutely adoring big brother to the newest addition.

I knew Quinn’s newborn photoshoot was set to a full day hoorah, purely because Erin and I chat. We can’t help it…get us on the phone, or find us running into each other in the school ground and you won’t shut us up. SO of course get her in the studio with me and it would be no different. Her kids play so well with my kids, we set up a time, I had food prepped and we put on endless movies, ensured the backyard was child friendly and they all entertained themselves thoroughly while I spent my time with baby Quinn. The original plan was to get the kids photos completed first so they could just play freely, but of course Quinn and I got carried away completely and by the time I was ready for them to come inside, they were filthy! Haha! But we made it work.

Siblings have the most beautiful relationship and seeing them together is by far the most rewarding for me to photograph. The Cody kids were absolutely no exception, they cuddles and kissed and laughed and loved. Quinn is one of the most loved newborn babies I have ever welcomed into my newborn studio and the photos of these four together just make my heart melt.

Thank you Erin for being my friend, thank you for allowing me to photograph your precious family, and for trusting me to do the job well, even if the kids did get themselves covered in dirt all morning 😉

Baby Parker | Melbourne Newborn Photographer

Baby Parker. What can I say, he was deliciously adorable and an absolute sweetheart to photograph…but we cannot go past the love given to him by his sweet affectionate doting big Sister Matisse. Watching these two together just made my heart sing…and my over eager snap happy shutter finger go crazy! What an absolutely incredible gallery, so beautiful, so sweet, so much love. If ever there was a family perfect for the types of memories I long to create, moments I live to capture, it was these four.

I cannot thank the De Bono Family enough for choosing me as their Newborn Photographer, for allowing me into your world, trusting in me to give you the memories of your sweet Baby Boy Parker and little Miss Matisse to look back on for many years to come. May these images fill you with all the warmth and love that I have felt while working on them for you.

Baby Billy | Melbourne Newborn Photographer

How adorable is little Billy!! Quite the frowning little man, but the more they frown, the more I fall in love with them, so of course, I completely adore this little man and could just photograph him everyday without growing tired ❤

At just 5 weeks old, Billy came into my newborn studio very alert and ready for his close up. His Mum and Dad, Briana and Andrew were just lovely and a delight to spend the morning with. My favourite part of a newborn session is getting to know the family.

Thank you Briana and Andrew for choosing me as your newborn photographer, for letting me in on your world for a morning of laughter and story telling. Billy is the most precious little man, please bring him back to the studio soon!

Baby Ollie | Melbourne Newborn Photographer

Baby Ollie and his Mum Jess and Dad Jason spent the morning with me in the studio last week and I have to say…it was the perfect way to finish off August. Ollie at just 2 weeks on the dot was so completely and utterly adorable! So full of smiles and personality, just like his Dad. Who also gave me just as many silly faces as Ollie did… 😉

It’s been a while since I met a newborn who smiled SO much! I missed photographing them the first few times, we wasn’t giving me the usual signs that a new baby gives, but then I was patient, and stubborn and refused to walk away and put the camera down until he gave me a smile…my back still hurts from the patiently waiting, but it was SO worth it!

Thank you Jess and Jason for choosing me as your newborn photographer. Thank you for spending your day with me in the studio and giving me the privilege of meeting you all and getting to know you better. PLEASE bring Ollie back to see me again soon!!

Baby Matilda | Melbourne Newborn Photographer

Newborn Miss Matilda and her big brother Ren…I may have to claim them as my own. Of course having photographed Ren when he was just 9 months old, I went into this photoshoot knowing full well that there would be complete and utter adorableness to be seen and oh my goodness they did not disappoint!

Such a beautiful, kind, loving family, who I am so blessed to have photographed twice now and I have high hopes that I will get the chance to do it again in the future.

Thank you Natalie, Tim and Ren for bringing Matilda to meet me, can I please keep her?!

Baby Phoebe | Melbourne Newborn Photographer

What can I say…Caroline and I spoke on the phone when she first enquired about a newborn photoshoot with me…we spoke for around 45 minutes. About everything, her life, our common stories, our little people, photography and everything else in between. I was so excited when she booked her session with me, I honestly felt like I knew her already and I was going to get to meet my new friend!

When they arrived in the studio with little Phoebe, I gave her a hug at the door, I was meeting a friend! And then I met her lovely Mum Jo, her adorable little girl Emilia and finally got a cuddle with tiny little Phoebe…what a doll!! I didn’t get to meet Matt due to him already heading back to work the week before, however we got to catch up on the family photos the very next day so everyone joined in the fun!

Emilia had the most wonderful time venturing in and out of my little Lily’s bedroom right across the hall…a girls room FULL of baby dolls, prams, books and all sorts of other things to keep a little person entertained between photos. And oh were the photos of these two girls absolutely precious. What a doting big Sister Emilia is, the cuddles and the kisses ❤ For such a little person, Emilia did everything I asked of her and more, even at the end when the light had changed in my studio, she let me repeat what we had already done just because!

I won’t lie…I do believe it was all due to her new found love of photography and my never ending promises to let her take a photo at the end…and by A photo, she heard 50+ each time! Thank goodness I work in the digital age hey! Haha! But she actually took a really beautiful photograph of her Mum and Grandmother holding baby Phoebe…so of course it was included in the gallery for her to keep as the very first photograph she ever took…Emilia, when you grow up, please come and work with me xx

I absolutely adore this entire gallery. Not because of the connection I felt with Caroline from the beginning…yes that does play a part, but honestly, the love shared between this family is just so lovely. What a privilege to be chosen as the family photographer for this beautiful family. To welcome them into my newborn studio and spend not just one morning, but two mornings with them, photographing the love and laughter, sharing our stories, getting to know each other.

So please, enjoy this gallery as much as I have enjoyed working on it. Caroline, Matt, Emilia and Phoebe, thank you. From the very bottom of my grateful heart, thank you for choosing me. Congratulations on the arrival of gorgeous little Phoebe. I look forward to that coffee date very soon xxx
